For instance, it wouldn’t be very practical to carry boating equipment if you live 1,000 km away from the sea, would it?

A water purifier, though often overlooked, can play a crucial role in many scenarios. 

Whether you're in an outdoor wilderness setting, camping with friends, or preparing a contingency plan that involves escaping the city, a water purifier is a must-have. 

In crisis situations, basic necessities like food and water tend to disappear as quickly as public order. 

And trust me, you don't want to witness this firsthand—especially when a water purifier is a low-cost addition to your EDC backpack that could mean the difference between life and death. 

You should also consider pairing it with a hydration water backpack, which is compatible with a wide range of tactical backpacks.

Multitool

That is, until a real critical or emergency scenario arises—when the smartphone’s flashlight can barely illuminate a meter ahead or, worse, the battery is dead. 

In fact, while most smartphone flashlights provide between 20 and 100 lumens, a high-quality tactical flashlight can deliver 500 lumens or more. 

Now that’s a reliable tool to have when you and your family are left in the dark—and vulnerable. 

Knife 

The knife has been with us far longer than modern humans have existed.

However, when the energy supply chain fails, without proper preparation, we could find ourselves without a reliable source of heat —neither to endure the cold nor to prepare food. 

For this reason, a firestarter is not just an outdoor essential but a critical tool that should absolutely be included in your tactical everyday carry bag. 

Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) 

An Individual First Aid Kit, also known as IFAK, is an essential item to include in your EDC backpack, as accidents can happen at any time. 

Even if you’re the most precise, prepared, and cautious survivalist, handling all the tools we’ve discussed earlier naturally increases the risk of injury at some point. 

With that in mind, your Individual First Aid Kit should include at least the following: 

• Professional tourniquets (such as CAT, SWAT-T, and SOFTT-W); 

• Gauze (to maintain direct and clean pressure on wounds until bleeding stops); 

• Shears (to quickly cut through materials in high-stress situations and access wounds for treatment); 

• Nitrile gloves (to prevent contamination and exposure). 

Do not underestimate the importance of learning the proper techniques to use all the items in your IFAK.  

In highly stressful situations, performing effective treatment—whether for yourself or someone else—can be incredibly challenging without prior knowledge and practice.
